The U-M Psychological Clinic offers therapy groups focusing on specific symptoms and/or areas of concern, such as social anxiety, depression, issues with attention or concentration, caring for a dependent loved one, or preparing for the stresses of fieldwork in an unfamiliar place.
Our therapy groups are supportive, educational, and aimed at building coping skills and addressing clients’ concerns. We offer group therapy to provide our clients with social support and the ability to interact and receive feedback from their peers.
The Advantages of Group Therapy
Group sessions give our clients a safe, controlled environment in which to learn and practice skills for effectively dealing with their situations. Clients are encouraged to participate as they feel comfortable, allowing themselves and others to benefit and learn from their contributions.
Being around others with like concerns gives our clients the opportunity to hear others’ perspectives on issues similar to their own during our group sessions. Interacting with others not only creates a support system for clients, but can also give their therapists the opportunity to interact with and observe them in a new setting, which can contribute positively to treatment.
Registration is required for all of our group therapy sessions. Please call us to register for the group that best suits your needs. Cut-off for new registrants is one week prior to the first session. The cost is $40 per group session per week for all registrants. Many insurance policies cover the cost of this service.

The Dissertation Stress Reduction Group will provide a supportive atmosphere to work on common thesis and dissertation challenges, such as procrastination, anxiety, self-defeating thoughts, lack of motivation, concentration problems, perfectionism, basic coping skills, lack of assertiveness, and poor work-life balance.

Strategies for Improving Attention and Concentration

This group provides a set of strategies that have been shown to be effective in enhancing attention and concentration skills. These strategies can be effectively applied to the classroom, study, and meeting situations in which distraction and inattention interfere with performance.
