The U-M Psychological Clinic offers therapy groups focusing on specific symptoms and/or areas of concern, such as social anxiety, depression, issues with attention or concentration, caring for a dependent loved one, or preparing for the stresses of fieldwork in an unfamiliar place.
Our therapy groups are supportive, educational, and aimed at building coping skills and addressing clients’ concerns. We offer group therapy to provide our clients with social support and the ability to interact and receive feedback from their peers.
The Advantages of Group Therapy
Group sessions give our clients a safe, controlled environment in which to learn and practice skills for effectively dealing with their situations. Clients are encouraged to participate as they feel comfortable, allowing themselves and others to benefit and learn from their contributions.
Being around others with like concerns gives our clients the opportunity to hear others’ perspectives on issues similar to their own during our group sessions. Interacting with others not only creates a support system for clients, but can also give their therapists the opportunity to interact with and observe them in a new setting, which can contribute positively to treatment.
Groups Offered at the U-M Psychological Clinic
Registration is required for all of our group therapy sessions. Please call us to register for the group that best suits your needs. Cut-off for new registrants is one week prior to the first session. The cost is $40 per group session per week for all registrants. Many insurance policies cover the cost of this service.

Mindfulness for Stress & Anxiety

Thesis and Dissertation Stress Reduction
Wednesdays from 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. starting Oct. 15th
This group will provide a supportive atmosphere to work on common thesis and dissertation challenges, such as procrastination, anxiety, self-defeating thoughts, lack of motivation, concentration problems, perfectionism, basic coping skills, lack of assertiveness, and poor work-life balance.
Overcoming Over-Eating Challenges
Tuesdays from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. starting Nov. 11th
Fridays from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. starting Oct. 3rd
This body image group will assist you in gaining a clearer understanding about the complex relationship we all have with our physical image and address some essential questions. This group will provide an evidence-based approach to improving your body image through scientific information, practice exercises, and group discussions.

Coping Effectively with Depression

Strategies for Improving Attention and Concentration
Mondays from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m., starting Nov. 10th
This group provides a set of strategies that have been shown to be effective in enhancing attention and concentration skills. These strategies can be effectively applied to the classroom, study, and meeting situations in which distraction and inattention interfere with performance.
It Takes Two to Tango: Overcoming Relationship Challenges One Step at a Time
Mondays 5:30 - 7:00 p.m., starting Oct. 6th
This group targets couples’ specific areas of concern in a supportive, educational environment. Couples will gain effective strategies to build strong relationship skills and overcome challenges such as communication difficulty, trust issues, or feeling distant.
Psychology Resiliency Workshop
Tuesdays 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., TBA
This workshop is specifically designed for students preparing for academic field placement as part of their graduate degree, research study, or study abroad program. Participants will gain effective strategies for adapting, coping, and managing emotions as well as strategies for returning to the University environment.
